A brilliant young man who created “beerako” was killed at Cafe Javas by an angry mob where he was accused of attempted arson. Revence Kalibwani Kato was a computer engineer graduate from Makerere University.

In 2010 the Daily Monitor reported about a 25 year-old ‘self-made’ software developer. The computer whiz kid represented Uganda at the 2010 Mobile Monday Peer Awards in Helsinki, Finland on September 26, 2010 where he was honored with the prestigious mobile communication award recognising his outstanding mobile software developing skills.

Last Wednesday evening, news began circulating on social media that a young man had walked into Cafe Javas, Parliamentary Avenue with a jerrycan full of petrol and matches trying to burn it down. The angry mob full of Bodaboda riders lynched him. It later emerged, this was Kato the computer wizard. It is not clear what exactly prompted him to go to Javas with petrol because he has no connections whatsoever with the famous eating place.

However, by the time of this incident, relatives say Kalibwami had been showing signs of mental disability. “He was not stable upstairs,” says a close friend.

He leaves behind an Australian pregnant wife and two children. There was a requiem mass today and burrial is tomorrow at Kalisizo.
